Dear Sheffield Interfaith,
I’m a volunteer for a charity arts Organisation, Without Shape Without Form, and we are currently touring the country with our free ‘Journey of the Mind’ exhibition and are at the New Art Exchange, Nottingham until 22 April 2023. We are also hosting some satellite events in Leicester and Sheffield.
This 8th April we will be at the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield hosting two engaging and creative workshops that provide a Sikh perspective on the Mind (both workshops are free to attend but please do book in advance- see pdf below and click on QR box).
There is so much focus, and rightly so, on mental wellness and we are bringing a unique and simple perspective. Personally, I’d love to hear the diverse view that an interfaith network would bring to these workshops.

Dear Friends,
I’m from South Yorkshire Climate Alliance, SYCA, and we are encouraging and supporting community climate action across the region.
Our aim is to expand the number of communities involved in climate action and deepen their impact or range of activities.
By community we mean: street, neighbourhood, workplace, faith group, community group, school, and many others
To help things along in Sheffield specifically, we wanted to create a small steering group. Victoria Penman, from the Sustainability Team at Sheffield City Council is keen to join this group. We also have support from VAS, and VAS CEO, Helen Simms is on the SYCA Board.
We work fairly closely already with Cathy Rhodes from the Diocese and we are hoping to get in touch with other faith groups.

Event Theme: “Ramadan is Community: Challenging the cost-of-living through inclusion”

Ramadan is a holy month of fasting observed by many Muslims in the United Kingdom. As one of the five pillars of Islam, fasting during Ramadan is a form of worship of utmost importance. Among the many positive attributes Muslims aspire to develop during this period, empathy with those less fortunate and a reinforcement of positive, proactive community engagement stand out the most, especially as the Office of National Statistics show that the cost-of-living crisis has impacted 92% of adults in the United Kingdom.
For us at the Dialogue Society, we uphold the belief that the inclusion of our diverse communities of all faiths (or none), cultures, ethnicities, abilities, and sexual and/or gender identities are crucial to the well-being of our society overall. Inclusion and the cost-of-living crisis are mutually exclusive; in short, more inclusion aids in tackling the cost-of-living crisis, whereas an increase in the cost of living contributes to the increase in hate crime and reduces inclusion.
So, this year, under “Ramadan is Community: Challenging the cost-of-living through inclusion”, we hope to foster a community dialogue on this theme throughout the UK. Through utilising the several faith festivities that will coincide with one other (Ramadan, Easter, Navaratri, Mahavir Jayanti, Passover and Vaisakhi), we hope to bring our diverse communities together to both celebrate and spark dialogue on how to further inclusion to tackle the cost-of-living crisis.
The event will be around a dinner table and alongside our traditional structure as it will include distinguished guest speakers and presentations about the theme, we are also planning on incorporating prayer, reflection, music, a very special art display, quiz as it is organized as a social event that would help to promote inter-social and inter-cultural understanding among the communities from different backgrounds.
We will serve a range of hygienically prepared home-made delicious Turkish dishes. The word “iftar” means fast breaking. Therefore, we will start serving the dinner at the fast-breaking time which will be around 8pm.
How about a challenge? This year we invite you to join us on the event day for a completely voluntary “Fasting Challenge”. In order to share the spirit of fast breaking amongst all the participants, as part of the fasting challenge, we invite our guests to fast for a day, or half a day or even for an hour to experience how Muslims fast and go on a spiritual journey of self-reflection and self-discipline this Ramadan. As mentioned above, this will be on a voluntary basis. More importantly, if you think that this may not be good for your health, please refrain from joining this challenge.
We also would like to note that while we love all of the children in our lives, we have decided to keep our Iftar Dinner an adults-only event. Thank you for your understanding.

Therefore, please kindly reply to confirm your attendance and do so by the 2nd April. Your presence at the event will be an absolute honour for us. Please let us know how many adults you are attending with alongside with your dietary requirements in your confirmation email.

On behalf of The Dialogue Society Sheffield Branch, I would like to take this opportunity to cordially invite you to a seminar by Dr Chris Hewer on Wednesday, the 16th November at 18:30. The topic of the seminar is “Family: The Building Block of Society”.
Dr Chris Hewer, who comes from a background in Christian theology, education, Islamic studies and inter-faith studies, normally visits Sheffield a few times a year for a set of seminars. Therefore, we just wanted to take this opportunity to listen to his inspirational speech, learn from him and have a chance to see our dear friends.
The seminar will be at St Peter’s Church who have so kindly opened their doors for the Dialogue Society to hold this seminar. The event will consist of two sessions with a short refreshment break in the middle. In the second session, there will also be a Q&A period. We aim to finish no later than 9pm.
